Other Forms of Reiki
Reiki has been used since before recorded history. Tenohira, (te a te) or "palm healing" is the oldest and most widely used form of natural healing.
Also known as "laying on hands"* this form of giving aid and comfort has been (and continues to be) used by everyone, including spiritual leaders, families, and both traditional and medical practitioners.
Modern Reiki, as developed by Dr. Usui, came to him while fasting and meditating.
During the process of developing and practicing Reiki, Usui also realized the importance of teaching it to others. He did this, plus he also provided a common sense approach on how to live a better life, via The Five Precepts, or Principles.
Since then, other people saw ways to add to Reiki, and different methods arose. The result is there are now many forms of Reiki. While most have their basis in Usui Reiki, they all offer something different and unique.
Besides Uber Reiki Therapy, there are about 25 other types of Reiki taught/used worldwide (and other forms being reported yearly), with the most common being:
Gendai - meaning modern, variation of Usui Reiki
Rainbow - working with the main chakras
Five Element Seichem- using the Five Elements and Univesal Life Force, or prana
Shambala - clear, repair, and balance the mental, physical, emotional, & spiritual aspects of a person
Karuna - uses sound and profound feelings to alleviate suffering or addictions
Kundalini - working through the lower/base chakra (no attunements or hand positions)
Imara - energy used to clear past life issues, and/or distance work
Hypno - hypnotherapy combined with Reiki
Aromatherapy - essential oils used with Reiki
Tummo - type of Reiki from Tibet
Sacred Flames - imagery/visualization, Divine flame
Ancient Egyptian - believed to be one of the oldest forms
Angelic - working with assistance of Angelic realms
Crystal - using crystals and minerals
Dragon - another method from Japan Fire Serpent - use of imagery, breathing, & etc.
Laser Reiki - energy through the fingers, for any and all kinds of issues
Uber Reiki Therapy - energy through hand/finger positions to treat all types of imbalances
Reiki is non invasive and done with respect to personal boundaries, mental and emotional states, and goals. People who are not "licensed to touch** generally perform Reiki with their hands slightly above the person they're treating, or at a distance. Since energy is not bound by time, space, or distance, it doesn't matter if you're actually touching for Reiki to be effective. What is important, though, is the intent***, respect, and focus.
* laying on hands" was/is the Western term/description.
** "Licensed to touch" are people who, by law, can physically touch another person. This includes: doctors, nurses, dentists, chiropractors, massage therapists, physical therapists, certified trainers, coaches, and ministers. Family members, of course, can appropriately touch one another, and students in any of the fields listed above, can also do hands on.
