How To - Torso/Front of Body
Front of shoulders: Hands are placed gently on either side of the neck in position as shown. If person is seated, hands/palms can rest on top of shoulders or collar bones (with finger tips pointed towards collar bone notch below Adam's apple.) Placement of finger tips/hands is done with respect to boundaries, regardless of age or gender. (Forearm does not touch client.)
Note: Ask (or demonstrate on the front of your own body where you're going to place your hands) before placing hands on the front of another person. Many men, women and children can feel vulnerable, be ticklish, fear choking, recovering from an injury, or have personal space issues associated with the front of their body.

Upper chest: Hands gently placed on upper chest. Therapist's hands are appropriately positioned with finger tips pointed to the side of the body. (With the thumbs resting on the top of the collar bones, the width of the palm keeps the therapists hands within allowable distance related to breast boundaries.) Again follow guidelines, and if you/client feels unsure, keep hands the 2 - 3 inches above the body.
Upper chest variation: Client's hands are held* over sensitive area, with therapist hands lightly touching client's hands. Do not hold too long, wiggle, or apply any pressure. Make sure you've asked permission before doing this hand placement, and always ask the client to place their hands over themselves before you put your hands on theirs. In other words, do not pick up and place the client's hands over boundary areas for them. Also, when placing your hands over the client's or removing them, do so with straight down or up movements.
Abdomen: Hands placed over mid-abdomen. Again, the touch used in Reiki is light to moderate, there's no deep pressure, pushing, or manipulating tissue. Some people are ticklish, or may have a relatively full (or empty) stomach, so be considerate of these things. (Always ask before placing hands on this area.)
This Reiki hand position is also excellent for grounding.

Lower abdomen: Hands are in line with the top of the pelvic bones, and several inches above the top of the groin area. Again, for obvious reasons, be considerate with weight of hands while doing Reiki in this area. If you sense the client is uncomfortable, hold your hands above their body or use the alternate method of your hands on top of theirs. (Again, it's always best to ask before placing your hands on this area.)
Lower abdomen variation: Client puts their hands down first, then therapist places their/s on top. Follow guidelines relating to no deep pressure, wiggling, or holding too long.
When using Reiki to treat the Chakras** on the front of the body (especially for other people), it's always advisable to either have them place their hands on their body first, or hold yours the several inches above their body.
Note: All hand positions demonstrated in the "How To" photos are the basic ones. However, after learning these, it's important to know when to adapt them, or use combinations. This allows for better treatment in addressing specific issues and/or areas of complaint.
* Sometimes clients like to hold their hands over the areas being treated (as long as they remain comfortable), so they can really get a sense of what it's like to feel Reiki flowing through their hands as well. If, for physical reasons, a person can't put/hold their hands over a particular area, always hold yours the several inches above their body. Reiki is just as effective, whether touching or not.
